Bilingual FAQs

Q: Is my child delayed because we speak two languages at home?

A: No. Bilingualism does not cause speech or language delays. Research consistently shows that children can learn two or more languages simultaneously without it causing confusion or delay. If your child is experiencing difficulties, those challenges would be present in any language they speak.

Q: Will therapy still work if we speak a different language at home?

A: Absolutely. At Bilingo Speech, our clinicians speak both English and Mandarin, which means we can deliver therapy in the language that best suits your child and carry out assessments that account for your child’s full linguistic background. We also work closely with families to develop home practice that fits naturally into your everyday language routines.

Q: How do I know if my child needs a speech patholoogist?

A: If your child has a speech or language difficulty, it will show up across all their language – not just one. Signs to look out for include limited vocabulary for their age, difficulty combining words into sentences, speech that is hard for others to understand, or challenges following instructions. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to talk it through with you.
